The Hazel Crest Park District was established in 1957. Located in the Village of Hazel Crest, the park district is a separate unit of government sharing land and some facilities with the Village. It is governed by a five member Board of Commissioners. The mission of the park district is to provide quality leisure and fitness opportunities and maintain park facilities that are available to all Village residents.
Currently, the Park District operates a Community Center Building, a Recreation Center Building and 14 parks which include various recreational facilities including nine (9) children's playground, eight (8) baseball fields, one football field, and one (1) soccer field. In all, park district land and open space cover 146 acres.
Open space located within the park district boundaries are owned by the Village of Hazel Crest, the Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (WRDGC). Park and open space area constitute approximately 10% of the overall Village land area.
A recent study conducted by Globetrotters Engineering Corporation, Inc. indicated that the quantity of park and open space land in Hazel Crest exceeds national standards. Existing park facilities are attractive and adequately maintained. With all the open areas available for recreational and other activities, the park district has only just begun to utilize all existing structural facilities.
In 2011, the Recreation and Athletic Departments Offices were moved to the Recreation Building. This provided both departments with easy access athletic and recreation programs and gave the departments more space to operate. Several classes that were initially held at the community center are now being at the recreation building, and the Senior Facility (which is located adjacent to the Village Municipal Hall.
Over the next few years, the Board of Commissioners will continue to utilize the facilities and spaces that exist within park district boundaries. As we look to make the Hazel Crest Park District a destination of choice for all its residents, stakeholders, and guests.
